The next morning, Brooke is in her room checking to see that everything is packed in her small overnight bag when there is a knock on the door and Nick sticks his head into the room. “Hey there!” Nick says smiling. Brooke gives him a brief cool look and turns back to her bag as he steps into the room. “Nick, what are you doing here?” she says. Nick walks up behind her and tells her he has come to drive her home. Brooke, still fussing with the bag, tells Nick that she’s already called a taxi and that it ‘s on the way. Nick says, “I cancelled it. I called all the taxi companies in town until I found the one you reserved and cancelled it.” Brooke looks at him then and with eyes beginning to water whispers “Why?” Nick tells her gruffly that he said he would give her a ride home and he meant it. Brooke sniffs softly and he takes her chin gently in his hand and turns her face to him. Their eyes meet as he says, “I’m sorry about last night, Brooke. Your call caught me by surprise.” Brooke looks away and says, “No, I’m sorry…I had no right to expect you to drop everything and chat with me. You have a life… a girlfriend.” Her voice breaks on the work girlfriend. Nick says “I have a lot of “girl” friends, Brooke.” Brooke says that she knows Felicia is more than that. Who could blame Nick, she’s beautiful, spunky…fun. Nick says she reminds him of someone else he once knew but lost. Nick then asks Brooke what was so urgent that she called him last night? Brooke doesn’t answer and Nick tells her that she can tell him…he’s here for her. Brooke tells Nick that she’ll tell him at the house…this isn’t the place. Nick zips up the bag and heads for the door. “Let’s go then.” Brooke grabs the paternity/DNA test pamphlets from the nightstand and follows him out.
Brooke is quiet in the car on the way to the house while Nick makes small talk. Nick thinks that maybe she is tired and, when they arrive at the house, comes around the car, opens the door and lifts her out. Brooke is surprised and tells Nick that she can walk. Nick says he knows that, seen her do it even, but explains that Hope is arriving this afternoon and Brooke needs to conserve her strength. He tells her to relax and let him pamper her. Brooke tentatively puts her arms around Nick’s neck as he carries her to the front door. He looks down at her and tells her gently that he could get used to this. He bends his head and kisses her gently but with considerable passion. Brooke responds completely and when Nick lifts his head he tells her that she has stars in her eyes. Suddenly the door opens and Jackie and Massimo are there to welcome Brooke home. Nick carries her across the threshold and Brooke blushes saying she feels like a bride! A painful look crosses Nick’s face momentarily as he sets her on her feet. Jackie and Massimo kiss her on the cheek and welcome her home. Brooke looks around finding it vaguely familiar. She begins to point out where the kitchen is, the bedrooms…overjoyed that she remembers her former house.
Jackie, having seen Nick’s looks of pain, asks him to help her with refreshments in the kitchen. Once there, she grills him on his relationship with Felicia saying she sees the way he looks at Brooke. He still loves her. Nick tells his mother to slow down and back off. He’s not ready to go down that road again. Brooke is married to Ridge. She may wake up tomorrow and decide she can’t live without him. Jackie asks Nick what happens if she doesn’t… what happens if Brooke sees Ridge for the “challenge” and “prize” that she pursued relentlessly but never really loved? Nick looks at his mother and asks her if she really thinks that could happen. Jackie says not only yes but reminds Nick that Brooke was happy with him. She was ready to marry him. Nick tells his mom it’s time to change the subject and bring in the refreshments.
Meanwhile, Massimo has been grilling Brooke about what she does and doesn’t remember. Brooke tells Massimo freely that she is grateful to Nick… he’s been a wonderful friend. Massimo asks her if that’s all he is to her, a friend. Brooke blushes and says nothing…her blush giving her away. Massimo then asks, “ And what about your husband? Ridge?” Brooke looks squarely at Massimo and says that so far all she can remember is how often he rejected her; hurt her. She says she remembers a spark they once shared but it seems to have burned out or at least it may have for her. She tells Massimo that he is being difficult about RJ. Massimo looks away and offers to help her with that. The baby needs his mother too.
Nick and Jackie enter the room ending the conversation. Nick looks at Brooke and begins to say “About your call…” Brooke tells him “Later, please…when we are alone.”<br>Nick looks intrigued but complies….

After a while Jackie looks at Massimo and tells the “kids’ they have to leave. Nick tells Brooke to sit, he’ll see them to the door as they say their goodbye. Kisses and hugs are exchanged as the Maronies leave. Nick comes back from the door and sits next to Brooke. He says, “Now, about that phone call…” Brooke pulls the brochures out of her pocket and hands them to Nick. He looks at them for a moment, puzzled as to why Brooke is giving her pamphlets on DNA testing. Brooke begins to tell Nick about her talk with Dr. martin yesterday…how he questioned her about RJ’s birth and the controversy surrounding the paternity. She tells Nick that after she explained about the paternity test RJ had after he was born that Dr. Martin got a strange look on his face. He asked her several questions about the timing of the test then got up and left. She explains to Nick that she came back later in the day and found that Dr. martin had left her the pamphlets explaining DNA testing. Brooke leans over his shoulder and opens the pamphlet in Nick’s hands. She points to a passage in the booklet while leaning in closer. Brooke’s hair brushes Nick’s cheek and he leans in to take in her scent. She turns her head and their eye meet…lips almost touching… Brooke stutters, flustered by the intimacy, but says huskily that because Nick and Ridge are brothers, there is no way a test could have been performed so quickly that would have conclusively pinpointed the father. Nick is about to kiss her when her words sink in. He pulls back and suddenly jumps to his feet and starts pacing. “What you’re saying Brooke…it can’t… I can’t… “ Nick says. He’s quiet, lost in thought and then looks at Brooke and says, “What this means is that someone else must have been in on it. Some one close to us who wanted things to come out a certain way!” Brooke tells Nick that she agrees…they need to have RJ retested, they all need to know the truth. Just then there is a knock on the door. Nick opens the door to find Deacon with Hope and her things. He enters and brings Hope to Brooke, to Mommy. There is a tearful reunion and Brooke looks up to tearfully thank Deacon. Deacon tells her not to thank him yet. Ridge doesn’t know he picked her up yet. He explains that he stopped by the house to get her. Katherine was not going to let him take Hope but he told her she could help him pack Hope’s things or he’d do it the hard way and go to the police. He wouldn’t let Katherine call Ridge to inform him of what was happening. He looks apologetic and explains that Brooke can expect a visit from her husband later today. Brooke, still holding Hope, smiles at Deacon and tells him it’s ok. She’ll handle Ridge. She says that she just wishes it were so easy to get to RJ. Deacon looks at Brooke and Nick and says there is something he needs to tell them. They look at Deacon expectantly when the phone rings interrupting. Brooke picks up the phone and it is the doctor who delivered RJ and who ran the paternity test. The doctor, calling to avoid being exposed by Dr. Martin, tells Brooke that there was a mistake in the paternity test… or at least that it was inconclusive. She tells Brooke that to be sure of the child’s paternity, she needs to have him retested. She apologizes and hangs up. The camera pans to the doctor taking a hand full of pills and swallowing them down…<br>Brooke hangs up and looking at Nick tells him what the doctor said. Deacon pipes up and says he thinks that’s a great idea but Ridge may not agree to it. Nick says he’ll get a court order test if he has to but that baby will be tested again. He walks over and takes Brooke’s hands in his. He asks, “You realize what this means, don’t you?” Brooke says, “Yes. I’ve been thinking for sometime now that I married the wrong man.” Nick squeezes her hands and kisses her cheek. He tells Brooke to hang tight…he’s going to talk to his brother.

Nick takes off to find Ridge. Brooke looks at Deacon and says, “Ridge isn’t going to take this very well.” Deacon agrees with her but tells her that Nick can hold his own against Ridge. Brooke sits down with Hope and looks at Deacon. She explains that it’s hard for her to imagine that she betrayed her daughter with him (D) but as she looks at Hope she tells Deacon that she can’t regret it. Deacon asks her how much she remembers about that time in her life. Brooke tells him that she doesn’t remember much.. that a lot of that time is fuzzy. Deacon sits across from her and asks Brooke if she wants to know. Brooke says yes…please. Deacon goes on to explain about Brooke’s father and Taylor’s scheming to get her out of LA… a scheme that almost got Brooke killed. He tells Brooke that Ridge came to her in Paris, led her on…kept her on a string as he has done for many years. When they returned from Paris, Brooke expected Ridge to leave Taylor and be with her but instead, he broke her heart. He walked out and left her a broken woman. Brooke has a brief flashback to that moment and her eyes fill with tears. Deacon continues to explain that he was unhappy with Bridget, finally admitting that he had married her for the wrong reason. He came to speak to Brooke and found her so vulnerable, hurt… that he wanted to help her heal…and they helped heal one another. He tells her that Brooke took on all the guilt but that he was more responsible for what happened. He too looks at Hope and says that he’s not sorry though. Brooke reaches out a hand and they cling for a moment, sharing their love for Hope. She thanks Deacon for telling her…she can only hope that Bridget has forgiven them. Deacon says that Bridget has found happiness and has moved on. Brooke asks Deacon if he’d be honest with her about something. Deacon says yes…he owes her that. She asks Deacon what he thinks about her marriage…what does he thinks of it…of her and Ridge together. Deacon tells Brooke that she might not like his answer. She says maybe not but she’d like it just the same. Deacon tells Brooke that from what he knows personally and all that he has heard, that Brooke has pursued Ridge since she was a teenager. He says that Stephanie always hated her and told her she wasn’t good enough for Ridge and he thinks that Brooke set out to win Ridge over at all costs to prove Stephanie wrong. He tells Brooke that Ridge repeatedly left her for other women, used her, kept her on a string. She married Eric to stay close to Ridge. That Ridge became an obsession for her…as much as keeping Brooke from Ridge was an obsession for Stephanie. Deacon tells Brooke that it was only when Brooke was about to marry Nick that Ridge pursued her back. Brooke gets up and walks to look out the window…”but why? “ she says out loud. Deacon says softly “ because Ridge knew if you married Nick he would have had no more hold on you. You loved Nick for who he was…not as a part of an obsession. But in the end, you still couldn’t let the obsession go and Ridge couldn’t let his brother win over him. ” “I hurt Nick terribly, didn’t I?” asks Brooke. “Yes” says Deacon, “but he still loves you. He won’t take you back as long as there is a chance that the obsession still exists.” Brooke looks at Deacon and says “I was so blind…so blind.” Deacon tells her that the important thing is that maybe now she “sees.” She says yes. Yes.

Meanwhile, Nick has stopped off at Forrester creations only to find that Ridge has left for the day. On his way to Ridge’s house, Nick stops in to Maroni enterprises to tell Jackie and Massimo of his and Brooke’s suspicions. He finds the two, speaking quietly with heads close. “Hey you two,” Nick says joyfully as he comes through the door. “You won’t believe this…hold on but Brooke and I… I mean…we think…” he falters and his eyes fill with tears. He says huskily, “We think that RJ maybe MINE! Mine, Mom! Mine!” Jackie’s eyes also fill with tears and she tells Nick she knows. Nick is taken aback and says “You know?” Massimo goes on to explain that they only just found out last night. Jackie explains about her visit from Deacon. She explains the second paternity test that Deacon’s friend at the lab did and how it was the results of that test that pricked her conscience into finally admitting the mess up with the first test. But what she didn’t know was that Deacon lied, or at least now says he did, about the results of the second test. Nick asks “Why? Why would he lie? I promised him he’d always be a part of Hope’s life!” Jackie tells Nick that although Deacon might have thought that Hope’s adoption was a good thing at first, he finally realized just what he would be giving up. But that wasn’t his only motive. She explains how Deacon wanted Massimo to throw her out, reject her. “A part I played only too well,” Massimo explains with disgust. Jackie reaches out and touches his hand in comfort before turning back to Nick. “Deacon wanted me, Nick,” Jackie says. “And he knew as long as Mass and I were together, he didn’t stand a chance. So he had to get Mass to throw me out.” Nick is standing rigid, fists clenched in anger. “ I could just about…” he starts. Jackie interrupts and tells him that he needs to understand that Deacon thought he was doing what Brooke wanted. Afterall, she had been obsessed with Ridge all her life. He knew Ridge wouldn’t care one way or the other about adopting Hope. “I’m not excusing him, Nickie, but someone was playing with Deacon’s emotions as well. Mass and I just haven’t figured out who it was yet.” Nick calms down for a moment and looks at his dad. “You realize that one of your son’s is going to be a loser in this, don’t you?” Nick says quietly. “Yes,” says Massimo. “I’d like to be there when you confront Ridge…please.” “Then let’s goget my son from my brother,” says Nick. He kisses Jackie on the cheek and says, “See ya later granny!” and walks out of the office. Massimo grabs his coat and kisses Jackie as well and tells her to wish him luck. Back at Brooke’s, Deacon tells her that there is more he must tell her and she’s not going to like it. In fact, he made some really awful decisions that may end up hurting a lot of people, her in particular. Brooke looks at him and can see he is in pain. She says, “Deacon, from the sound of things, I’ve done my own fair share of hurting people I care about. I think the accident has allowed me to look at my life much more objectively. And what I see is a woman who is in no position to be judgmental. How about we get it all out on the table and deal with it then?” Deacon agrees and tells her about the second paternity test. He tells Brooke that he had serious second thoughts about Nick adopting Hope. He was scared. He reveals that he told Eric about the problem with the first paternity test and about the second test he ran. Deacon explains how Eric would guarantee that Ridge would never adopt Hope and would personally ensure that Ridge would allow him access to Hope if Ridge turned out to be the father of the baby. Deacon goes on to say he lied to Jackie, telling her Ridge was the father. Deacon looks at Brooke and tells her that Nick tested to be the father in the second test. Deacon is a little surprised that Brooke doesn’t look shocked. She actually smiles at Deacon and explains that she already suspected RJ might be Nick’s based on what her new therapists told her about paternity tests. She does says she is a bit perplexed by Eric’s hand in all of this. Deacon tells her that she’ll have to ask Eric about his motivation…Deacon just jumped at the chance to stay as Hope’s daddy. Deacon also tells her that to be honest, he wanted Massimo to dump Jackie because he (d) had developed feelings for her. Brooke now looks a bit stunned. “Well…,” she stutters, “well… that’s a surprise.” “Self serving is what it is,” Deacon says ashamedly. Brooke says “love often is…do you love her Deacon?” “ I think so,” he says, “But now she won’t even talk to me.” He notices that Brooke is looking pale, her skin translucent. “You need to rest, “ he says and pushes her back on the couch, lifting her feet. He covers her with an afghan and tells her to rest. He’ll watch Hope. Brooke, realizing she is exhausted, complies, closes her eyes and quickly slips into a dream filled sleep….

Meanwhile, Nick and Massimo arrive at Ridge’s house only to find him gone. Nick asks Katherine where Ridge is and she says she isn’t sure. He came home and said he had to go out. Nick spots the playpen with RJ in it. He walks over and lifts RJ out. Katherine rushes forward but Massimo grabs her arm and gently tells her to wait. Nick holds RJ gently and sweetly tells him that he is one handsome young man. Massimo’s eyes fill with tears and he asks Katherine to prepare a small bag for RJ. Katherine tells Massimo that she doesn’t think Ridge will like that. Mass looks her in the eye and says “What, you don’t think my son would approve of RJ spending time with Grandpa?” Nick chimes in while still looking at RJ, “We’d like to take him to see his mom for a while. How could Ridge object to that?” Katherine hesitates but is swayed by Nick’s charming smile. She goes to pack a small bag for RJ. Nick is still cooing at RJ and says, “First thing we’re gonna do, little guy, is get your name straight. It’s gone be Dominic Junior. I can live with DJ for a while if it makes mommy feel better. “ He kisses RJ’s forehead as Katherine enters with the bag. She still looks nervous but Massimo takes the bag and tells her that they will be at Brooke’s. They leave with the baby, grabbing a car seat sitting by the door.
Back at Brooke’s, Deacon is sitting at a table coloring with Hope in sight of Brooke. The doorbell rings and Deacon goes to answer it. “Sharpe,” Ridge says, “What the hell are you doing here?” Deacon tells Ridge to watch his language, there are women and little people present. Hope looks up and waves at Ridge who is furious that she is there at all. “How dare you take Hope from my home!” Ridge starts. Brooke, roused by the raise voices, wakes from her vivid dreams. She sits up suddenly and sees Ridge at the door. Brooke is confused having just experienced a series of dreams where she was the object of Ridges rejection and scorn yet again. Deacon confronts Ridge saying “Hope is my daughter Forrester. I’ll take her and see her whenever I feel like it!” Ridge pushes Deacon and Brooke jumps up telling Ridge to stop it! Ridge looks at Brooke like she has grown 2 heads. He tells her that she is sick and doesn’t understand what is going on. Brooke fires back that she is just coming to understand a lot of things…and he has no right barging into her house and ordering anyone around. Hope is her and deacon’s daughter. In fact she remembers quite well (having just relived it in a dream) Ridge’s disgust when he found out she was having Hope. What right does he have inserting himself into this? Ridge looks hurt and says huskily that he is her husband. He cares about Hope. Brooke’s anger disappears at Ridge’s apparent pain. She says quietly that she knows he cares…she never doubted it but things are different for all of them now. Ridge asks Brooke to explain to him how things are different…they are still married, they love each another. She begins tentatively, “ Everything is different Ridge…I am not the same woman you married. All of us, Deacon, Nick, you, me…the children, have all been affected by my accident. I can never go back to where we were…I am not that person. And…RJ…” “What about RJ?” Ridge says aggressively. Brooke tells him they need to talk. Just then the door opens and Nick enters carrying RJ. Massimo enters as well. Nick looks past a stunned ridge and says to Brooke, “Guess who’s coming to dinner?”…..
