Max stood outside Brooke's door with his hand raised to knock. He paused wondering if he was doing the right thing. Afterall, just last night he had vowed to stay away from the woman and make tracks home where he'd hole up and rebuild the wall around his heart. But he had unfinished business to attend to before he left. He raised his hand a second time and was suprised when the door opened before his knuckles could connect. Hope stood in the doorway, dressed for her first day of school. Max smiled down at the pretty little girl thinking how much she looked like her mother.
“Hi Mr. Max! Today is my first day of school,” she said proudly. “Well actually, it’s just orientation. Mommy’s letting me take the school bus too.”
“Hope,” Brooke said as she approached the door. She caught sight of Max and smiled in warm surprise. “Here’s your lunch, sweetie.” The little girl took the lunch bag from her mother, waved goodbye, and strolled down the driveway to her bus stop.
Both the man and woman watched the little girl in silence until the bus stopped and she was safely aboard. Brooke sighed and brushed a small tear from her eye. “It always gets me,” she said emotionally, “that first day of school.” She sighed again and turning to Max with a brilliant smile said, “How about some breakfast?”
Max longed to sit with Brooke over a breakfast table but he knew it would ruin his resolve. He had to cut ties quickly and move on before he got sucked back into the dream he had vowed to give up. Brooke was Nick’s and that was that.
“Actually, I came to say goodbye,” Max said quietly.
Brooke stopped her movement into the house and turned back to Max. “Goodbye?”
“Yes.”
“But..but…why?” she asked in a shaky voice. She felt as though her heart had stopped beating. “Why Max? Have you and Nick had a disagreement?”
“No, Brooke. More like an agreement,” he replied solemnly.
“I…. I… I knew you’d go back, Max, but I didn’t think it’d be so soon. Nick needs you,” Brooke pleaded softly. “I need you.” Shs added gently.
“And I need to go Brooke! “ Max replied, frustration creeping into his voice. He didn’t want to leave this woman or his friend but he also knew his heart couldn’t take much more. “I can’t stay.” He thought quickly, “You see I have this lady back home…” he left the implication hanging.
Brooke felt a pang of hurt and jealousy. And surprisingly, desperation. “Please Max. Please stay just one more week. For Nick. Until he wrestles with all these changes and emotions.” Brooke felt badly for playing on Max’s emotions but she couldn’t let him leave before understanding her own feelings for this gruff, enigmatic man.
Max sighed. He was about to decline when he realized she was right. Nick did need him to help with this mess with Taylor. He looked at Brooke and caved. “One more week but no more.” His grave look disturbed Brooke further.
She smiled brightly and asked, “Great! Now what about that breakfast?”
Max steeled himself against her smile. “No, no, thanks. I need to talk to Nick.”
He turned to go and Brooke soberly watched him walk to his car. “Max?”
“Yes?” he turned.
“Thank you,” she answered, emotion catching her voice. She saw Max wave in acknowledgment, watched him get in his car and drive away. \\

Stephanie leaned back against the door as Taylor sauntered into Nick’s office. From the way Taylor was walking Stephanie knew she was in for a show. Thus far, Taylor hadn’t spotted her and she liked it that way.
Nick eyed Taylor as she made her way into the room. Nick noted that she had already donned a maternity blouse and was walking with a hand on her stomach. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes but couldn’t help the quirk that came to his mouth.
“What are you doing here Taylor?” Nick asked cautiously.
“Visiting my fiance of course,” Taylor replied a bit petulantly.
“I thought we cleared that little issue up the other night,” Nick pointed out maintaining his cool.
“Well that was before this little issue popped up,” Taylor replied rubbing her stomach.
In the corner Stephanie face reflected surprise and then glee.
“Taylor…” Nick began and stopped as he noticed Stephanie watching the interaction. “Beat it, Forrester. You’re not welcome.”
“Stephanie stepped to the door. “I’ll be back Nick,” she said with an evil grin.
Nick turned back to Taylor. “Look Taylor, I don’t love you. I haven’t for some time now and it’s not going to come back. That part of our relationship is over. I’ll be there to help you with the baby but that’s as far as it goes. When the baby comes we’ll work out custody arrangements. Heck, I’ll even keep him or her full time if that’s what you want but you have to understand. There IS no more us. “
Taylor stood silently, her back to Nick trying desperately to control the rage racing through her.
“Taylor?” Nick asked moving to her. “Taylor?” Nick asked again as he reached out and touched her.
Taylor jerked at Nick’s touch. She turned and slapped him hard across the face. “You’ll regret this Nick. You’ll pay! Brooke will pay! You’ll ALL PAY!! She screamed.
“Hey what goes on in here?” Max asked from the door having caught the last few minutes of the exchange.
Taylor stalked to the door and stopped in front of Max. “You’ll all pay,” she spat at Max in a deadly voice as she left the office.

Ok, I was loving it but it seems as though now Sam is the hero. It's like Nick barely cares and Sam is doing all the things that Nick would do.

I know I am in the minority here but do all of the men have to want Brooke? And why is Sam doing all of the things that Nick would normally do and say? It's like Nick is Ridge and Sam is Nick. I am only on page 8 but I am not happy with the way things are going for Nick.

Ok, ok, I'm changing my mind again. I'm a woman so it's my perogative to. I am so HAPPY that Nick now knows the baby is his. I also like Sam but I want Brooke and Nick together, so why not Sam and Jackie? He is already smitten with her. Hurry and write more, I am about to get to page 11, I will be finished soon.
I hope your back is better.

Oh this is so much better than the show. Too bad we can't get this to BB and let him see how a real writer writes.
Nick knows the baby is his and he now knows that RJ is his too. I know this is not the end and I also know Taylor and Ridgid will be up to something soon enough, but right now I am loving this story! I would love to see Max hook up with Bridget maybe, and Sam with Jackie. Of course I want my Bricky.

Once again, I am loving this but why do all the men have to be in love with Brooke? One minute she thinks it's Nick, then one minute it's Sam, and the next it's Max. This Brooke is becoming similar to the one on the show. We all know Nick would move heaven and hell if he truly thought Brooke had Ridgid out of her system for them to be together. I love Brooke but it's getting tired that all of the men are in love with her, and the other men are doing the things that Nick would normally be doing.

Am I going to be the only one to admit that I kind of hate Max? OK I'll let it rip! It's not that I really hate him, I do kind of like him. But DAMN! He's encroaching on his best friends woman! Five yard penalty repeat second down! I know Brooke's really not the taken woman at this point but still in my world there is the unwritten rule that you don't touch the ex. Am I the only one? The competition does make it interesting but... as much as I like the guy he's going against the code. I feel you. I don't hate Max and I don't blame him for being smitten with Brooke either, most men are. He is supposed to be Nick's best friend, he knows Nick better than anyone and he knows Nick is still in love with Brooke. They just found out they share (3) children now, no matter how Max feels, he needs to back off. But I am still loving the story.

Thank you so much for picking this up again, newestconvert! I have to admit that foreverbrookie's point about Max was well taken. As much as I liked him, he did pluck my nerves when he interrupted that kiss between Nick and Brooke earlier. I was also surprised by his kissing Brooke on the lips. However, I'm glad that Nick and Max's friendship remains intact. The best part though was his telling Nick about Taytramp and Fridge's sexual antics. YES! And how adorable is little Hope being jealous because Nick is RJ's daddy! Stephanie sure doesn't know when to quit, does she? Nick is certainly time enough for her though. I'm definitely looking forward to little Miss Pee Stick and her lies especially since she has no idea that Max saw her and Frigid together. Thanks for the excellent read! 8-)ITA Miss Jr. And thanks again to newestconvert for this great read. YOU really should be writing for B & B. Can you imagine the ratings if you were the writer?? Through the roof, this story is something you can actually sink your teeth into.

“Well, I see that went well,” Max observed wryly to his friend.
Nick rubbed his hands over his face. “It was that apparent?” he answered sarcastically. “Honestly, Max. I feel awful. I never meant for Taylor to get pregnant. Even when we were engaged we had both been pretty clear that we didn’t want to start out our lives together with a baby. Not right away. Then things fell apart and well…. Brooke…”
“Yes, Brooke,” Max echoed. “Look Nick I was going to leave today…”
“No…please… not yet Max. I know I haven’t been a great host but…hell, I need you to stay. I don’t want to mess things up with Brooke and I’m not sure how to handle Taylor at this point. She’s so angry.”
“Well, I was going to say that I changed my mind about leaving but it was nice to hear you ask,” Max replied with a wolfish grin.
“Ahhh, just for that you’re buying lunch! Come on,” Nick said as he headed for the door.
Max watched his friend hurry through the door ahead of him. He was slow to follow as he considered what staying would mean for his own heart. He sighed long and deep. Sometimes doing the right thing was terribly difficult…

Brooke paced the floor in her living room wondering if pregnancy hormones could be responsible for the awful feeling that seemed to be taking over her. Something was wrong. She could feel it in her bones. She rubbed her hand over her very pregnant stomach and felt the baby kick. “You feel it too,” she whispered, poking back at what she was sure must be a foot or elbow. Brooke walked out onto her patio and looked at the sky. Thunder rumbled a ways in the distance. “A storm is brewing in more ways than one,” she said to herself.
She thought of Max and his visit that very morning. She knew it was wrong for her to ask him to stay. She also knew that she desperately didn’t want Max to leave. Not yet. She had to understand this attraction she had for him. Only then could she try to reconcile her feelings for Nick. Nick. What was he going to do about Taylor and her baby? He had been about to marry the woman 9 months ago and now, here she was, pregnant with his child. Surely he would want to be with her now. Brooke knew that she herself wouldn’t want Nick just because he was this baby’s father. But Taylor, now she was another story altogether.
The skies began to darken as the storm moved in. Brooke moved inside the sliders and watched the storm approach wishing there was something she could do to stop its fast approach…..

Taylor watched from the bushes along Brooke’s patio. She watched the woman move around her pool, obviously deep in thought. Taylor noted her unease, as though Brooke sensed she was being watched. Taylor smiled as she heard the thunder. Yes… a nice loud storm. That’s just perfect, she thought. Her smile deepened when she noted Brooke’s worried, almost frightened look at the sky. Yes, this would be just perfect….

Seriously, why doesn't she reunite with Ridge, anyway? She's already carrying his brat.

Brooke listened as the storm continued to advance. She stood in the middle of her living room as the room darkened from the storm. She ignored the lights finding the encroaching darkness fit her restless mood. She was glad the children were with Bridget and Mark tonight. She needed the solitude to think things through. Nick had called only minutes before. Brooke smiled as she remembered his happy, slightly slurred speech. Apparently he and Max had enjoyed an extended lunch at Chucks and he’d called to ask if they could stop in on their way back to the Shady Marlin. Brooke smiled again as she recalled how Nick had actually giggled saying he wanted to wish his daughter goodnight. He certainly was embracing this baby, she thought as she touched her belly again. He’d also promised they would not drive and take a taxi.
Brooke stretched and began to pace as lightening from outside lit the darkened room. Was that something she saw pass by the window near the kitchen, she wondered? Another flash of lightening revealed nothing and she resumed her pacing, feeling her back muscles squeeze in protest. The storm struck with a wicked intensity. The intense lightening seemed to keep the room flickering like an old movie. Brooke nervously scanned the room, chiding herself for her fears, while she convinced herself the shadows were not alive. As the storm reached its peak Brooke turned to the sliders as she heard it open. Thunder pealed as a shot rang out in the dark. Brook clutched her side under her right breast. Pulling her hand away she saw the blood in the next flash of lightening. She had enough time to look back at the door and watch it quietly close as she slid to the floor and toward unconsciousness. A tear rolled down her cheek as she lay in the aftermath of the storm, bleeding, and clutching her stomach where the baby had suddenly become still. “Nick…” she cried softly as she slid further into oblivion.
