Brooke lifted her head as the winds began to die relatively quickly. She sat up away from the children where she had been sleeping next to them on the matress, her ears picking up the quiet that was decending on the island. She stood stretching her back and surveying their small retreat as the children began to stir, disturbed by the sudden quiet after hours of screaming winds. RJ called out to Brooke and reached out his arms to her, suddenly more frightened by the quiet than the storm itself. She lifted him up, feeling her back muscles protest at his weight. She reassured him in a calm, warm voice that quickly dissipated his fears. Hope sat on the matress watching her mommy hold her brother. He was such a baby, she thought, and ....so lucky to be held by mommy. Brooke caught Hope's look and called her to her side. She knelt next to Hope with RJ still in her arms. " Family hug!!" Brooke said and Hope threw her arms around both her mother and RJ. It was something she and the kids had been doing since Sam had left. They had agreed after Sam left that when any of them felt lonely, they were to just call out "family hug" and they would all engage in one big hug fest. Brooke loved it and inevitably, one of the kids would shout out "family hug" once a week whether lonely or not. It had become a fun family ritual. Taking advantage of the lull, Brooke sent the children into the bathroom to take care of business. It was getting unbearably hot in the small space and after using some water to flush the toilets, grabbed towels, wet them to wipe down the children. She was barely finished cooling the children down when she heard the telltale whistling of the wind. The eye... the quiet was just the eye, not the end of the storm! She hustled the children back under the stairs as the winds quickly gained momentum. She watched in fear as the fallen ceiling and roof shook in the renewed winds. She knew the back side of the storm was often more violent than the front... swallowing her fear, she pulled out a book and snuggling with the children, began to read Winnie the Pooh.

Newestconvert, like everyone else, I'm also hooked on this fan fic! It's excellent! And you managed to do something that I never dreamed imaginable: created a REAL triangle with two great men! Even though my bias leaned toward Nick in the beginning, Sam is a really great guy and I find myself leaning toward him with each installment. Absolutely great writing! You definitely have Taylor pegged in more ways than one. I also noticed that several people made the observation that Ridge has yet to inquire about RJ. Wonder why? I also like Bridget and Brooke's relationship in your story, as well. Now you know you can't leave us hanging much longer! Hopefully Nick and Sam will get there in time. Thanks again for a great read!

Nick looked over at Sam who continued to pace up and down the aisle of the FC jet. He understood Sam's anxiety but his pacing was driving Nick crazy. He had been on the phone for a good portion of the trip, talking to his friend Max who had retired to the Carribean after having served as both a first mate and then a captain for Marone Industries. Over the years he and Nick had worked together and become family, especially when family was far away. AND they had gotten thrown out of more than one bar together, covering each other when things got rough. Max was the closest thing he had to a brother...far closer than he could ever have been with his real brother. Nick knew Max would jump at the chance to help him, they had that kind of relationship. Once Nick had explained the situation, Max had signed on immediately. It hadn't hurt for Max to know that the damsel in distress was quite beautiful....and special to Nick. Nick finished his business on the phone and turned to Sam. "It would do you some good to try and get some sleep," Nick said. "You look exhausted and we will have a long 24 or more hours ahead of us." Sam looked intently at Nick. "There is no way I can sleep! No way! I... she... Brooke...," Sam stammered. "She thinks she so strong, so brave... the children. My God, I should have insisted she leave weeks ago!" Sam said in frustration. Nick looked intently at Sam. "What is it that you aren't telling me Winston?' "Nothing. Nothing Marone. I'm just concerned. I've been through a hurricane before. It wasn't pretty." Sam replied. "Me too," said Nick. Suddenly uneasy, Nick got up and began to pace with Sam. They still had an hour until landing. Both men willed the plane to move faster....

A car met Nick and Sam at the airport and drove them along the coast to a marina where Max was waiting for them. The two men eyed the 100 foot luxury yacht with awe and admiration. Max had done very well for himself. He had invested smartly and was now living the high life in the Dominican Republic. Although he kept a modest house on the island, his real pride and joy was his 100 foot yacht. With 3 bedrooms, a salon and formal dining room, it was quite a spectacular boat. Nick had to chuckle when he saw his friend waving from the fly bridge. He looked out of place in all of this luxury. Still scruffy and ruggedly handsome, he looked like he should have been piloting a pirate ship instead of a luxury yacht. Nick and Max hugged with real affection as they met on the deck and Nick introduced Sam. Sam and Max quickly assessed one another and, after tentatively liking what they saw, shook hands in greeting. Max led the men into the salon and told them they were about ready to cast off. Max knew these waters well and also how close they could safely track behind the hurricane. Already the storm was moving out of the Virgin Islands on it's way north out to sea. The waters, however, would remain rough for several days in its wake and they needed to proceed with caution despite the size of the boat. Nick understood this from his own days as a captain but Sam was anxious to get underway. Max tried to calm Sam, explaining that they wouldn't be able to help this woman and her children if they all ended up at the bottom of the ocean. Max watched Sam walk to the glass door and stare out unseeing at the worsening weather. Max raised his eyebrows and, nodding his head in Sam's direction, muttered to Nick, "He's got it bad." Nick took in Sam's frustration and replied, " If you knew the woman, you'd understand." Max looked assessingly at his friend. "You too?" he asked. "We used to be married," Nick explained. "Hmmm.... most men wouldn't mind seeing their ex at the bottom of the ocean," Max said with a smile. Nick laughed. "Like I said, you haven't met her." Nick said, his voice going husky despite all his efforts to appear emotionless. Max looked sceptical. "Never met a woman worth sailing into a hurricane." Nick laughed again but knew Max was right. Max had had his women from time to time but he'd never met one that could capture his heart. Nick had, at one time, felt sorry for his friend but if Max was lonely, he certainly was comfortable with it. "Ok, let's get going. I could use your help on the bridge, Nick. It's going to be a rough ride. Make yourself comfortable, Winston. I cleaned out the master suite for the lady and her kids. There's another room where you and Nick can bunk. I'll take the third smaller room. You should try to get some rest. We don't know what we'll run into on that island but we'd best all be prepared for the worst." Sam swallowed hard. He thanked Max upfront for doing this. As Nick and Max went out the glass sliders to head up to the deck, Max glanced back at Sam. "Try not to worry. If Nick was married to this woman, she has to have some guts, not to mention brains. ........... I sure hope you don't get seasick." and with that parting shot, Max closed the door behind him and stepped out into the rain to make his way to the bridge with Nick.

Back on St. John the winds were beginning to die down. Brooke and the children had made it through a frightening night... was it night? Brooke wondered. They had little light from the candles in their small cubby and she had lost track of time. She no longer knew how long the storm had raged, how long they had been trapped in their space under the stairs. It was hot and stuffy and the children were miserable and bored now that the worst of the storm had passed. At one point during the storm, the roof had settled, causing fear to rise in Brooke's heart. But the roof had actually settled more securely and what had been a refuge during the storm was now a jail. She was afraid to try to move the debris, fearing a total collapse. She wondered how long it would take for someone to find them and get them out. She wondered how long it would be before she and the children would drive each other crazy. She turned from her survey of the debris back to the children. Time for the crayons and coloring books....

Excellent! This is really shaping up to be quite the pirates' adventure! Now THIS is the Nick I fell in love with--not a dressmaker designing maternity clothes with an incubator. Do Brooke and the little ones have enough food and rations? I understand that a part of Sam wants to tell Nick about Brooke's delicate condition but I'm not sure it's his place. But if push comes to shove, he may have no choice.

Hours later the boat cut through the waves staying behind the back edge of the hurricane. Nick stayed up above with Max, reliving old times while watching for floating debris. Sam had stayed below investigating the yacht. The master suite had a king sized bed and a small bath off the side. On the divan to the port side of the room was a small built in divan piled with folded clothes. Nick must have told Max about sizes for there were 3 piles of clothes, one for a little boy, one for a small girl and one for a woman. Nick and Max must have thought that Brooke and the children would leave the island with nothing. Sam returned to the salon and turned on the satellite TV, immediately turning to storm coverage. The Hurricane had moved off the Virgin Islands and already reports were coming in from St. Thomas and Virgin Gorda on the devastation. It didn't look good, Sam thought and he got up to walk to the glass sliders. Dawn was approaching and he thought he could see an island off in the distance. He went out on deck, grabbing a deck wall support as the seas tossed the boat from side to side. Time to find out where they were and he climbed up the outside stairs to the bridge above. Up on the bridge, Nick was steering the boat while Max took a cat nap on a longe chair. Sam approached Nick who pointed to the island in the distance. "St. Thomas," he said. "Not much longer. An hour or two at most." Max heard Nick's voice and stretched. After a moment he joined the other two men looking at the island. He and Nick discussed what would happen at the Island. Most likely there would be no place to tie up, or at least not one that was safe. Regardless, they had to leave someone on the boat to prevent scavengers from trying to take it over. Desperate people did desperate things afterall. It was decided that Max would ferry Nick and Sam to the shore in the launch and then return to the yacht. He'd then ferry back and forth delivering the bottled water and canned goods he had stocked on board as part of his own hurricane relief effort. Once delivered to the beach, he'd wait on the boat for Nick and Sam to return with the woman and her children. The plan was in place. It was almost time to go forward with it.

Most well laid plans have obstacles and Nick, Max and Sam soon learned of theirs. Max had dropped the two men on shore near the ferry dock and returned to the yacht to load the launch with the relief supplies. When Max returned to the shore in the launch he found both men impatiently waiting for him. The roads were closed, blocked by fallen trees and downed power lines. They quickly helped Max unload the launch and returned to the yacht to reposition the boat as close to Brooke's beach as safely possible. People were already taking some of the supplies Max had left. They only took what they needed, as island people would do. Sam directed the men to the beach at the base of Brooke's villa, no easy task considering the downed trees made it difficult to even make out the villas. He located his own rental villa and back tracked to Brooke beach. Max delivered the men a second time and they proceeded to try to find the steps leading up to the villa. Sam moved as much debris from the steps as possible as they went up knowing that Brooke and the children would have a difficult time clamboring over the fallen trees and broken steps. Nick was impatient with Sam, accusing him of wasting time, not knowing of Brooke's condition. They reached the top after almost a half an hour and stood in horror looking at the collapsed building. Sam panicked and immediately began tearing at the fallen trees, brush and roofing. Nick grabbed Sam, pulling him back. He pointed to the precariously hanging roof and told Sam that although he understood the urgency, they had to go slow. Sam turned tormented eyes to Nick and stuttered, "Time may be of the essence!" "Not if we cause the roof to collapse further. Think man! We don't even know if they are in there." With that, Sam began shouting out Brooke's name, hoping against hope that the three were alright. Nick and Sam called out for over 20 minutes with no response. Both were about to give up thinking that Brooke and the children had holed up at a shelter or with a neighbor when they heard a muffled shout in return. the men strained their ears.... "We're here, we're here! Don't leave us...please..."

Inside, Brooke and the children tried to lie as still as possible. The heat and humidity were stiffling and they had all they could do to take in the limited food and water Brooke had set aside. Even the children, normally so full of energy, lay lethargically in the heat. At first Brooke had tried to wet them down with a wet towel but in the end it had only seemed to make them feel worse. Someone had to come soon, Brooke thought, trying to fight back tears of despair. Even the baby growing inside of her lay silent now, no longer kicking her as was her favorite hobby. The three lay drifting in and out of sleep. Brooke dreamed of the cool sand in her toes, of walking along the beach holding Sam's hand. She heard him call out to her and smiled as she dozed. Sam. Such a handsome man.... "Mommy. Mommy!" Hope said shaking Brooke awake. "Listen!" And then she heard it... a man's voice calling her name. She closed her eyes in silent thanks before opening her mouth and shouting a reply....

Max watching the shore from the yacht heard the men shouting from a distance. He paced anxiously wanting to help but afraid to leave the yacht alone. The hell with it, he thought. He knew how to disable both the boat and the launch so that no one could steal it away. He ran down to the engine room and removed spark plugs from the engine. He dropped them into a knapsack and, taking it with him, climbed into the launch and motored the short way to shore. Once on shore he did the same to the launch, stuffing more spark plugs into the knapsack. He climbed the stairs in less than half the time it took Nick and Sam thanks, in part, to the extensive clearing Sam had done on his way up to the villa. He reached the top and followed the voices around the house to find Nick bending over and taking debris from Sam. They had started a tunnel into the fallen roof. Sam was inside handing tiles, sheet rock and wood back to Nick who was throwing it further aside. Now and again then men would shout into the tunnel and Max could hear a female voice and an occasional child's giggle in return. He joined Nick in removing debris and asked Sam if he wanted some relief from his position on hands and knees inside the tunnel. Sam declined the offer, determined to get to Brooke and the children as quickly as possible. "Almost there..." he shouted to whomever was listening. Brooke heard him close and began to pull debris away from the direction of Sam's voice. Within minutes she saw an opening and Sam stuck his grinning face into the room. Hope and RJ jumped up and down in joy and Sam calmed them quickly, not wanting to disturb the tunnel's shaky opening. Sam smiled widely at Brooke. "Ready to go?" he asked tenderly. "Ready? You can say that again!" she replied bending to kiss Sam while he was still half in the tunnel on hands and knees. "Then let's go quickly...not sure how long our escape hatch will remain open. Hope, I'll back out through the tunnel and you'll crawl behind me. Brooke, you'll want RJ to come next and then you. " Brooke looked nervously at the tunnel. "You sure I'll fit Sam?" she said rubbing her bulging tummy. Sam looked at her lovingly, taking in her fuller figure. "If a 6'2" man can make it, I think you're safe," he answered with affection. Sam sobered. "ok, let's go." he said and began backing through the tunnel. Hope crawled in after him and Sam continued to talk to her the entire way back. He could hear RJ chattering to Hope and Brooke behind urging RJ forward. Sam backed out into the daylight and was helped to his feet by Nick. Hope was next out of the hole. Nick bent to take her hand and pull her out the last foot or so. The sun stung Hope's eyes and she called out until she felt Nick pick her up and hold her and soothe her in a calm voice. Hope recognized Nick's voice immediately and she relaxed and snuggled into his neck, trying to adjust her eyes to the light. RJ was next to emerge and he took cried when he hit the bright light. Sam scooped him up and soon RJ was being comforted by Sam in much the same way as Hope was by Nick. Max stared at the two men draped in children and shook his head in disbelief. He turned to see a blond head emerge from the hole, followed by a relatively slender body. He reached down to clasp her small hand and help the woman to her feet as she finally emerged from the hole as well. Both Brooke and Max felt a jolt of electricity run through their fingers as the two touched. It was quickly forgotten by Brooke, however. Blinded by the daylight and off balance from the quick rise to her feet, Brooke swayed dangerously. Max grabbed the woman before she could fall and scooped her up into his arms. "Easy there, little lady," he said in a gentle, husky voice. "Go slow." The woman rested her head aginst the stranger's shoulder, relieved to feel the cool breeze and sunlight on her face. Max stood as though rooted to the spot, the memory of the electric shock still coursing through his veins.....

I knew it. I knew Max was gonna fall for Brooke. Can't wait until Nick sees Brooke's pregnant tummy. Will he think it's his or will he immediately assume it's Sam's? Thank God Brooke and the kids are finally safe out of that house. Can't wait to hear what happens next. ;D

Wow, I can't tell you what a treat this has been. I just got back from a three week vacation and the first thing I cecked was whether you had any new installments to your wonderful story. I haven't even bothered to check the latest storylines out, but this morning while I was enjoying my coffee I was soo submerged into your story that I was blissfully ignorant of the hurricane treatment the living room got from our girls. The only problem I am having is that we have three great guys here, all deserving to be happy, but only one can get the girl. As this Nick that you are treating us to is exactly the one I fell in love with originally, I am strongly tending towards him, but I'd also like Sam and Max to find happiness with a great woman. Thanks again for this treat.

Fantastic! YIPPEEEE!! I'm thrilled that Brooke and the little ones were rescued! I had no idea that Max would fall for Brooke. I don't know enough about him right now to form an opinion one way or another, but I couldn't help but notice how happy she was to see Sam. Of course, that could all change when she sees Nick. You have built up quite a triangle here that threatens to explode into a very interesting quadrangle. ;D

Brooke blinked her eyes quickly trying to adjust to daylight. She rested in the man's arms for just a moment longer, taking in his masculine, slightly spicy smell, only just holding back a murmer of approval. She lifted her head from the man's shoulder and he immediately set her on her feet, steadying her for a moment before moving away. She turned to look at him. He was tall, as tall as Sam, dark hair and dark scruffy beard. Ruggedly handsome, she thought noting that he avoided looking at her. She stepped closer getting into the man's line of sight. "Thank you," she said holding out her hand. ""I'm Brooke." She heard RJ squeal and shifted to see Nick setting RJ on the ground, still holding her hand out to Max. "Maxwell O'Brien" Max replied avoiding her hand. Max wasn't sure Brooke had heard him as her eyes hadn't left Nick. She dropped her hand and turned smiling at first Nick and then Sam. "I should have known it would be you two." "We three," Nick replied shortly, unable to take his eyes from Brooke's obviously pregnant belly. "Yes," Brooke replied turning slowly back to Max. "Nice to meet you Mr. O'Brien," she said holding out her hand a second time. "We'd best be going," Max said to the group ignoring her hand a second time. "There's a second hurricane on the way and I don't plan to be caught in it." He brushed past Brooke and started down the stairs to the beach below. Brooke frowned after him wondering if she had said something wrong. Max continued down the stairs ahead of the others unable to forget the stunned look on his friend's face. Nick obviously hadn't know that Brooke was pregnant. Max wasn't sure what that meant but he did know that his friend looked none to happy about it! So, the woman was beautiful and very pregnant.... and obviously full of complications. He'd enjoyed the company of many a beautiful woman in his lifetime and had thus far managed to avoid the complications. He wasn't about to start now, he told himself remembering the spark of attraction. No sireeee. Especially with his friend's ex-wife. Sam was the first of the rest of the group to suggest they head down the steps. He held out a hand to Hope and led her to the stairs. "Hope and I first, then Brooke and RJ and Nick,"he suggested. He looked at Nick for confirmation and when he got a slight, cold nod, moved down the steps with Hope. Sam sighed. From the look on Nick's face it was going to be a long trip back.....for all of them.
